ABOUT PPT

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened”

- Anatole France

The Purple Patch Trust (PPT) is an animal sanctuary located in the Delhi NCR area, dedicated to providing refuge for abused and abandoned small animals. We offer shelter, healthcare, and nourishment to all manner of small creatures – from rabbits and guinea pigs to budgerigars and finches – who have been deserted, mistreated, or neglected by their human families.

Registered as a not-for-profit Charitable Trust under the Trust Act of 1882, PPT is proud to be recognised by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). Donations to the Trust are eligible for tax deductions under section 80G (5) (vi) of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Furthermore, we are eligible to receive foreign funds under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) of 2010.

While the Trust was formally established in January 2019, our journey began in 2016 when two guinea pigs were left at the Puljal residence by an individual migrating overseas. Gradually, more small animals in need of a safe haven found their way to the Puljals, whether through adoption or rescue from unsuitable homes. Recognising the growing need for a dedicated sanctuary, PPT was born. As the number of residents increased, a small plot of land was leased and transformed into a fully functioning shelter, complete with pens and aviaries to provide ample space, nutritious food, and proper medical care.

Our core objective is to elevate the status of animals from mere playthings to cherished companions and family members, deserving of the same care and respect as any human being. We strive to improve the relationship between existing pet owners and their animals and raise awareness about the dire consequences of animal mistreatment.

Sadly, many people acquire pets without fully appreciating the time, effort, and financial commitment involved. Overwhelmed by these responsibilities, some owners neglect and ultimately abandon their animals. We have rescued animals surrendered through veterinarians, discovered in abandoned houses, and even found in open spaces and parks, deprived of basic necessities like food and water. We firmly believe that small animals and birds, often kept as pets, are akin to babies who never grow up. Once adopted, they require lifelong care and attention, as they cannot fend for themselves or even express their pain.

The allure of owning exotic animals as status symbols often overshadows the potential consequences. Invasive species can harm not only themselves but also the environment. Furthermore, keeping native species as pets is strictly prohibited under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and CITES Schedule I. We are unable to accept such animals but are happy to recommend suitable shelters.

To foster compassion and understanding, the Trust organises educational activities, particularly for children, emphasising the importance of responsible animal companionship.

In July 2023, disaster struck when the PPT was inundated by floods, necessitating the evacuation of all 120 resident animals. Thanks to the incredible support of volunteers across Delhi NCR, we successfully rescued and rehoused all creatures. They are currently residing at All Creatures Great and Small in Faridabad.
